Finding Work While Living with a Disability | Altius Group

Written by Altius Group | Jan 31, 2023 3:07:43 AM

Finding the right employment can be difficult for anyone and even harder if you have a disability. But there are people who can help.

A disability shouldn’t preclude anyone from engaging in the workforce. It’s well recognised that paid work can provide physical and mental benefits that can’t be gained through other activities. If you have an injury, health condition or disability, you may be eligible for disability employment services that can help you find rewarding employment.

Suitable Industries and Jobs for People with Disabilities

There are many jobs that are suitable for individuals with a disability. Some jobs will suit a person with a physical disability, while other roles may be better suited to a person with an intellectual disability.

Some job roles can be modified to better suit a person that has a disability. People that have a physical disability are often well suited to office-based roles, such as:

  • Office Administrator
  • Bookkeeper/Accountant
  • Call Centre Operator
  • Receptionist
  • Laboratory Assistant
  • Teacher/Teacher’s Assistant
  • Dental Hygienist

Some of the roles listed above may also be suitable to people with an intellectual disability, as well as the following:

  • Fulfillment Officer
  • Receptionist
  • Designer
  • Photographer/Assistant
  • Veterinary Assistant
  • Nursery Worker or Landscaper

How to Find Employment While Living with a Disability

If you’re living with a disability, you may find that looking for work can be daunting. Despite this, there are a number of individuals and organisations in Australia that can assist you. Let’s take a look at some things you can do while searching for work.

Ask Family & Friends

Let your network of family and friends know that you’re looking for work and the type of role you’re after. They may know of a vacancy, or be able to make some suggestions.

Check Employment Websites

Almost every industry advertises roles on sites like Seek, CareerOne and Indeed. Even if the advertised role isn’t suitable for you, the ads can give you an insight into the organisation and what they do. You could contact the organisations that interest you and let them know you’re keen to work for them and the type of roles or work you’re interested in. They may have a role available now or will keep you in mind for a future vacancy.

Career Counsellor

Many people find it difficult to know what types of careers they would be good at or will find the most enjoyable. In some cases, seeing a career counsellor can help narrow the field of job opportunities. Once you know where your strengths and interests lie, it can be easier to focus your job search efforts.
